Svenja Deininger: Bildbaumeister

Svenja Deininger, Untitled, 2014

BILDBAUMEISTER bauen Bilder.

Adrien Tirtiaux: Hotel Charleroi 2014. La force du changement

Ville Basse, 14.11.–16.11.2014

HOTEL CHARLEROI 2014: LA FORCE DU CHANGEMENT will take place November 14 – 16 in Ville Basse, the lower part of Charleroi’s city centre. This area experiences heavy transformations since a couple of years through the planned execution of the city’s latter renewal projects, Phénix and Rive Gauche. While Phénix, mostly financed through EU-fundings, focused on creating public and cultural infrastructure, approximately a fifth of the area was acquired by a private investor and is currently demolished to give way to a shopping mall. Between desillusion and hope, the present state of Ville Basse is a field of rubble.

Seen with a bit of distance, the Phenix and Rive Gauche projects fall within the capitalist dynamic of destruction / reconstruction that Charleroi followed throughout the 20th century. The shopping mall responds to an immediate and pragmatic need: there seem to be no other way to bring back commercial activity in the city centre. As [...]

Mladen Stilinović: Un saber realmente útil (Really Useful Knowledge)

Museo Reina Sofía, 29.10.2014–09.02.2015

Education is never neutral or disinterested. It is always organized according to a set of articulated principles, and its methodology reflects a number of beliefs, from the highly pragmatic ones to the conviction that knowledge is an end in itself. The exhibition Really Useful Knowledge starts from the notion of “really useful knowledge” inaugurated by workers clubs in UK in the early 19th century, to oppose the production-driven education organized by the ruling class. Through this reference to the beginnings of struggle against unrestrained capitalist exploitation, and early efforts towards self-organized education of industrial workers, it advocates establishing the new ways of reciprocal learning and teaching, and for the re-examination of forms of our social and political organisation.
The exhibition presents an array of strategies and methodologies through which artists deconstruct “common knowledge” and challenge hegemonic views on history, art, [...]

Joe Scanlan: The SEA - salut d'honneur Jan Hoet

Mu.Zee, 23.10.2014–19.04.2015

The sea has always been a great source of inspiration for the arts. Its attraction can undoubtedly be ascribed to its ever changing impressions. In its infinite beauty it may be soothing but in its unpredictability it becomes threatening again. Artists will always be fascinated by the endless play of light, space and movement.
The Sea is an exhibition that is elusive just like a wave, ebbing, flowing and leaving traces that time and again are erased by new forces. The Sea is an exhibition in dialogue with Ostend, spread over several locations, with Mu.ZEE as the starting point of this voyage of discovery.

Jan Hoet was behind the planning of this event. For him, this was to be his last major exhibition. However, on 27 February 2014 we had to bid our curator farewell. He had focused on this project until the very last weeks of his life. The exhibition thus grew from a tribute to the sea into a homage to Jan Hoet… one of grand gestures and short stories, a salute of [...]

Alessandro Balteo Yazbeck: New Territories: Laboratories for Design, Craft and Art in Latin America

Museum of Art and Design, New York, 04.11.2014–06.04.2015

Alessandro Balteo Yazbeck: New Territories: Laboratories for Design, Craft and Art in Latin America

Alessandro Balteo Yazbeck in collaboration with Media Farzin, Eames-Derivative, (small version). From the series Cultural Diplomacy: An Art We Neglect, 2006-2013

The term “new territories”, as evoked by Italian architect and designer Gaetano Pesce, refers to the state of making in today’s globalized society, a phenomenon that has helped to spur a confluence of art, design and craft. The exhibition New Territories: Laboratories for Design, Craft and Art in Latin America will examine this trend in several distinct cities throughout Latin America, where some of the most pertinent new directions in arts and design are emerging today.

New Territories explores the collaborations between small manufacturing operations and craftspersons, artists, and designers, and demonstrates how the resulting work addresses not only the issues of commodification and production, but also of urbanization, displacement and sustainability. The exhibition will explore a number of key themes, including: the dialogue between contemporary trends and artistic legacies in Latin American art; the use of repurposed materials in strategies of [...]

Corinne Wasmuht

Corinne Wasmuht

Corinne Wasmuht, Ausstellungsansicht, 2014
