The lack of important technical infrastructure forces the people in Nilbar Güreş's pictures to leave their homes for every phone call. The late connection of the East Anatolian village shown in the photographs to the telecommunications network is no coincidence. It is about the elusive, structural discrimination of people in an area of Turkey predominantly inhabited by Kurds. With Open Phone Booth, Nilbar Güreş succeeds in creating an impressive portrait of a village that refuses to give in. Despite the discrimination they have experienced, the inhabitants hold on to their connections and their language. In other words, what forms the basis of their identity. Open Phone Booth can be seen on the Hov?! farm in the originally Slovenian-speaking region of Carinthia. Despite all the differences between southern Carinthia and eastern Anatolia, older inhabitants of this region have had similar experiences. They too were denied necessary support measures and communication in their own language was made difficult. But how to remember? Or how to forget?
