The Aichi Triennale, which has been held every three years since 2010, is one of the largest international contemporary art festivals in Japan. In 2019, the festival’s fourth iteration will feature an international contemporary art exhibition alongside film, performing arts and music programs, bringing together over 80 individual artists and artist groups across a range of expressive domains to showcase their cutting-edge works.
Performativity is the first chapter of a trilogy on the relationships between performance art and art objects. The exhibition aims at observing the fruitful interactions between two paradigmatically opposed practices. The first is based on time and the second on space. It focuses on the permutations which have been proposed by visual artists in recent years. It is completed by future appointments Performability and Performing. The first is dedicated to the performability of an artistic object and the second to its own ability to perform. Performativity focuses on performance sources of poetics aimed at widening the scope of our senses through the latent evocation of a body, a choreography, a narration or a behaviour. Focusing on the semantic expansion of the performance, Performativity shows, through an exhibition, what remains of a performative act in an object, be it accomplished or imaginary.

Portadores de sentido presents a broad range of contemporary art by artists from Latin America and the Caribbean from the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC). The work in the exhibition is informed by artistic research that elicits narratives, resources and associations with a number of disciplines. With those disciplines in mind, the exhibition has been organized into four groupings, each one of which borrows methodology or derives inspiration from areas of inquiry beyond aesthetics.
The first grouping, Insertions, concerns ethnography and its theories; the second, Excursions, is an analysis of geography; the third, Concrete Environments, considers the implications of urbanism; and the final group, Mediations, addresses media and mass communication. The exhibition emphasizes the artists’ analytical and sensitive responses to a given environment, and how artworks are experienced [...]
