Taking its title from the first verse of the poem Labyrinth by Jorge Luis Borges, this exhibition brings together installations, drawings, sculptures, paintings, videos and books by artists belonging to the international collection of contemporary art of Luiz Augusto Teixeira de Freitas.
In order to reflect the wide variety of meanings that an art collection can achieve, the exhibition is organized as a labyrinth: it has neither a beginning nor an end, no specific theme, it is not centered in any territory, time or belief. And, nevertheless, the options that are posed are endless: dialogues are established, encounters are generated, previous assumptions are deconstructed and innumerable possibilities unfold.

Sharjah Biennial 14: Leaving the Echo Chamber will explore the possibilities for creating art when material culture is under constant threat of human destruction and climate degradation, offering artists from the UAE and around the world an internationally recognised platform for exhibition and experimentation.
The biennial will include three distinct exhibitions organised by each of the three curators, presenting works by contemporary artists to explore the ways in which contemporary life, enabled by rapid technological change, has created a seemingly inescapable “echo chamber” of information, complex personal networks and shifting narratives that are physical, spiritual and virtual. Presenting new commissions, large-scale installations and films, the biennial will be on view in SAF buildings and courtyards, as well as other locations in Sharjah.

Portadores de sentido presents a broad range of contemporary art by artists from Latin America and the Caribbean from the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC). The work in the exhibition is informed by artistic research that elicits narratives, resources and associations with a number of disciplines. With those disciplines in mind, the exhibition has been organized into four groupings, each one of which borrows methodology or derives inspiration from areas of inquiry beyond aesthetics.
The first grouping, Insertions, concerns ethnography and its theories; the second, Excursions, is an analysis of geography; the third, Concrete Environments, considers the implications of urbanism; and the final group, Mediations, addresses media and mass communication. Bringing together 17 artists and collectives from the region and beyond, Crude explores oil as an agent of social, cultural and economic transformation across the Middle East and North Africa, as well as a driver of geo-political upheaval. Oil has been a trigger for misguided colonial adventures, wars and coups; a catalyst for nation building, modernisation and development; and a cause of terrible ecological disasters. Oil, and its attendant industries and economies, has produced a spectrum of representations—architectures and infrastructures, documents and records, plans and photographs, and image and artifacts—that bring alive these complex histories. Much of the historical material lies buried in various national, corporate and media archives.
