Mladen Stilinović: The Translator's Voice

Mladen Stilinović, An Artist Who Cannot Speak English Is No Artist, 1992

Mother tongue, foreign tongue, official or minority language, endangered language, lingua franca… Whatever category it falls into, language is not only a medium of communication, but it gives us a sense of belonging, creates community, and filters our experience of the world. Equally, language is related to power, and can be used both to include and exclude those who speak differently. In a time when migration and displacement are more and more commonplace, this exhibition asks: what does it mean to live between the languages? Does globalization make us all «translators»? What will be the language of the future?

Participating artists: Erik Bünger, Luis Camnitzer, Esra Ersen, Jakup Ferri, Rainer Ganahl, Dora Garcìa, Joseph Grigely, Susan Hiller, Christoph Keller, Zineb Sedira, Mladen Stilinović, Nicoline van Harskamp, Frank Westermeyer & Sylvie Boisseau, Ingrid Wildi Merino, Xu [...]

We congratulate Nilbar Güreş on receiving the BC21 BostonConsulting & BelvedereContemporary Art Award 2015!

The bi-annual award, valued at EUR 20.000, was presented to Nilbar Güreş on 27 October. From the Jury Statement: "The jury finds the diversity of artists’ positions compelling, which—combined with the excellent presentation of the works—made the deliberation on the finalist both very interesting and difficult. Notable for its idiosyncratic approach to a variety of media, Nilbar Güres’ work distinguishes itself for its engagement with both the humor and politics of identity, sex, and gender. The artist’s collages, photographs, drawings, and objects reveal a playful intelligence with which she confronts normative conventions and stereotypical representations to great effect."
Nilbar Güreş was nominated for the BC21 Art [...]

Dark Side of Nature is the first chapter of “The White Dot and the Black Cube”, an exhibition project in six parts that will unfold during one year in the space of the museum.

Roman Signer: POM' PO PON PO PON PON POM PON. Eine Querbildung von Skulpturen

Middelheim Museum, 24.10.2015–27.03.2016

The departure point
The intrinsic departure point of this formation lies in the year 1961, with two works of art that altered the course of art history: Piero Manzoni’s Socle du Monde and Claes Oldenburg’s text I am For… By inverting a pedestal, thereby turning the whole world into a work of art in one fluid movement, Manzoni placed a certain step towards what we recognise as a work of art, how that work can be presented and what the audience can expect. Oldenburg’s text does exactly the same thing in a totally different guise: in 49 statements, the artist proposes a new way of thinking about the relationship between art and life (or the world). It is a rhythmic list where more attention is given to the sound than to its impact as a manifesto. The artist described it 50 years after it was written as a poetic, slightly satirical ode to the possibilities of using anything in one’s surroundings as a starting point for art—the art movement that [...]
