Gabriel Sierra: Proportio

Gabriel Sierra, Untitled (Cola de Zorro), 2011

The complexity of the universe has always fascinated mankind, which has constantly sought to reveal its mysteries, the origins and laws underlying creation and existence itself.
What is there in common between the arrangement of sunflower seeds, the conglomerations of galaxies, a Gothic cathedral, the pyramids, Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings, the Fibonacci series and human DNA? A particular number, a geometric proportion discovered by the Pythagoreans, defined by Euclid and called “divine proportion” in a treatise by Luca Pacioli, illustrated by Leonardo and printed in Venice in 1509.
The irrational number, 1.6180, represented by the letter Φ of the Greek alphabet, is the symbol of the universe’s harmony. Nature, art and science are closely tied. The multiple forms in which Φ manifests itself highlight the profound relationship between the physical world, artistic and intellectual creations and the beauty of numbers. The “golden [...]

Sharon Ya'ari: Disputed Landscape: Enacting Landscape

Sharon Ya'ari: Disputed Landscape: Enacting Landscape

Sharon Ya’ari, Agave, Hadera, 2012

“Vision is as important as language in mediating social relations, and it is not reducible to language, to the “sign”, or to discourse.” (1) Landscape is not only the designation for the ‘world outside’ but always also for something that is defined through social use—a social use in which vision plays a dominant role. Landscape is thus not only a social covenant, a convention, but also a visual phenomenon, an aesthetic construction.(2)
From this perspective we might assert that landscape ‘as such’ does not exist, that it is continually yielded through cultural production, however not solely—or by no means primarily—through agriculture, urbanism and economics, but instead as a social formation, as a visual topography that follows social distribution. And if it is true that visual culture is ‘the visual construction of the social, not just the social construction of vision’ (3), then aesthetics and [...]

Nilbar Güres: Video Screening Program: Illusion

Nilbar Güres, Wolf and Lamb, 2011 (video still)

"For illusion is not the opposite of reality; it is a more subtle reality which enwraps the primary one in the sign of its disappearance."

Gabriel Sierra

The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, 04.05–28.06.2015

Gabriel Sierra

Gabriel Sierra, Untitled, Structures for Transition #10 (qué hora es afuera?), 2008–2013. (Installation view)

Gabriel Sierra's project consists of a group of constructions to stand in or to walk over, which relate abstractly to the idea of inhabiting different moments of space and time. The exhibition features a cyclical title that changes hourly:

10:00 am Monday Impressions.

11:00 am How the Outside Leaks into the Room.

12:00 pm Smells Like 100 Years Old.

1:00 pm The Room Is in My Eye. The Space under My Body.

2:00 pm In the Meantime, (This Place Will Be Empty after 5:00 pm).

3:00 pm An Actual Location for This Moment.

4:00 pm Few Will Leave Their Place to Come Here for Some Minutes.

5:00 pm Did You Know Who Built Your House?

Sierra is intrigued by the language of man-made objects and the dimensions of the spaces in which we live, work, and think. His practice employs a variety of techniques – from sculpture and spatial interventions to performance and texts – to examine how the human body functions in [...]

Roman Ondák

Johnen Galerie, 02.05.–20.06.2015

Roman Ondák

Roman Ondák, The Joys of an Iron Curtain Trip to the Black Sea<span style

For his second exhibition at Johnen Galerie, Roman Ondák developed a sequence of older and new works that are presented in three rooms. As usual, Roman Ondák’s work evolves from a performative conception. All sculptures, installations, photographs, and performances emerge from interpersonal actions, like the fragments of an old door that are installed on the floor, arranged in the V-shape of a half-open door. A door grille blocks the approach to a corner in one room. A hand-painted tag attached to this found object indicates “Unauthorized access prohibited”. As the label for the work is located behind the grille, the viewer has to read the label through the fence. The third work emphasizes the performative sequence of four drawings: “Passage” (2007) refers to a work from 2004 about Japanese steel workers, who were given bars of chocolate to make little sculptures out of the silver wrapping foil. The second room shows an [...]

Roman Signer: VOID. there's nothing more left, but a little trace from human beings

Ginkgo Space, 28.04.–27.05.2015

Roman Signer: VOID. there's nothing more left, but a little trace from human beings

Roman Signer, Two Fans, 1998

Ginkgo space aims to explore the unique aesthetic values and cultural identity in contemporary Chinese art, to examine the Chinese artists’ diverse creativities in depth, actively participate in the developmental progress of Asian contemporary art and share the experiences of collecting contemporary art based on cultural traditions with collectors. Through two years of planning and preparation, Gingko Space will present its inaugural exhibition, “VOID: there’s nothing more left, but a little trace from human being”.
Gingko Space is honored to invite Mr. Li Zhenhua to be the academic host, Liu Tian and Marc Glöde as the curators. Through new methods of research and learning, the three of them assign artistic practice to those works without specific objects or iconography. The artists come from nine different countries, and the research reaches those overlooked new trends among the broad artistic movements. This exhibition will present the [...]
