Gabriel Sierra: From the Object to the World – Inhotim Collection

Gabriel Sierra: From the Object to the World – Inhotim Collection

Gabriel Sierra, Estantes Interrumpidos #9, 2008–2012

Palácio das Artes and Centro de Arte Contemporânea e Fotografia in Belo Horizonte are hosting the exhibition Do Objeto para o Mundo – Coleção Inhotim (From the Object to the World – Inhotim Collection). This traveling show marks the first time that a part of Instituto Inhotim’s collection has left the institute’s facilities in Brumadinho (MG). Featuring over 50 artworks, most of which never shown before at Inhotim grounds, dating from the 1950s up to the present day, the exhibition is composed of a cross-section of the collection, and examines the field of contemporary art, in the light of the institution’s collection and programs, which first opened to the general public in 2006. Co-produced by Fundação Clóvis Salgado, the show will run until March 8, 2015, after which it will travel onward to São Paulo, opening at Itaú Cultural in April 2015. It will be free to enter at all touring [...]

Roman Signer: Second Autumn

Art Stations Gallery, 13.03.–31.05.2015

The exhibition A Second Autumn presents the circulation of ideas, artistic and aesthetic attitudes connected with environment from two periods. The first is the 1960s and 70s, which shaped the ideas of “environmental ethics” and “deep ecology”, and led to increased awareness of the environment and, at the same time, a blossoming of avant-garde practices in art. The second is the beginning of the 21st century, postulating the need to radically rethink the anthropocentric approach to ecology.
A Second Autumn is yet another exhibition which takes as its starting point works from the Grażyna Kulczyk Collection – this time it is the work of Karel Malich, who made the landscape into the starting point for the entirety of his artistic endeavours. The Czech artist, who celebrates his ninety-first birthday this year, often refers to the events and memories of his immediate surroundings during his childhood. At certain points in his work he radically [...]

Roman Signer: Rachel Withers. Roman Signer's Library of Marvels

The Mill Co. Project & Create, 05.03.–04.04.2015

To complement Roman Signer’s Slow Movement installation opening on March 4th at The Barbican, The Mill Co. Project & Create are hosting a supporting show devised and made by U.K. art critic and Signer aficionado Rachel Withers and based on the contents of Signer’s library.
A self-confessed book addict, Signer has been amassing books and printed matter for many decades. However, he stresses, he doesn’t use his library to research art ideas; he goes there to escape, relax and indulge his huge appetite for information and images of all kinds. On its shelves, books on geology and vulcanology, meterology, hydraulics, aviation and polar exploration jostle for space with volumes on art and architecture, photography, cinema and the avant-gardes. Their topics are often eclectic to say the least, ranging from folk and “outsider” art, via scientific parlor games, kayaking and ball lightning, to Renaissance garden design, early twentieth-century uranium [...]

Mladen Stilinović, Julius Koller: Shifters: Signaling in Latin America and Eastern Europe

gb agency, 31.01.–21.03.2015

Mladen Stilinović, Julius Koller: Shifters: Signaling in Latin America and Eastern Europe

The exhibition Shifters highlights the work of artists operating at the margins of the art market, with a particular focus on the peripheral scenes of Latin America and Eastern Europe in the '60s and ‘70s. It brings together proposals that seek to redirect the perception of reality through some few simple gestures: designating, demarcating, displacing. Far from using cultural products in a stereotypical way, the artists reunited in this group-show adopt different strategies of appropriation to make these objects appear under a new light. They engage in what Michel de Certeau coined as The Practice of Everyday Life.

With works by Paulo Bruscky, Luis Camnitzer, Eduardo Costa & Roberto Jacoby, Antonio Dias, Juan Downey, Stano Filko, Carlos Ginzburg, Tomislav Gotovac, Alberto Greco, Željko Jerman, Július Koller, Jiří Kovanda, Edward Krasiński, Gastão de Magalhães, Hélio Oiticica, Ewa Partum, Mladen Stilinović, Goran [...]
