Roman Signer: Il Museo Siamo Noi

Kunstmuseum Luzern, 07.12.2013–16.02.2014

Under the title "Il museo siamo noi" there will be a presentation of art of the 1970s from private collections in Lucerne. Members of the public are invited to contribute artworks from their own collections, along with the stories relating to them. Il museo siamo noi should be understood in programmatic terms: inspired by Joseph Beuys’ phrase “la rivoluzione siamo noi”, Kunstmuseum Luzern also claims that it is only through a dialogue with the public, in an engagement with its immediate environment, that a museum can exist.

Benjamin Butler: Intersection- Contemporary Abstraction And Figuration

Benjamin Butler, Dark Tree (Pink), 2008

Thinking about this online exhibition of artists from around the world, I tried to come to some conclusions about why I was attracted to them. I am not a curator by trade although I guess I curate all the time when I look at artists' work. My blog, Mockingbirdthoughtz, was the conduit that connected me to the Torrance Art Museum. When TAM curator Max Presneill asked if I would be interested in curating an online exhibition of artists similar to the postings on my blog, I took this opportunity to investigate the relationship of the artists I have collected to present. A basic theme concerning the relationship of figuration to abstraction emerged.

Although there can be no substitute for experiencing the work in person, with the nuances of surface, luminosity, and energy that are evident in a first-hand experience, these tangible encounters can only be hinted at on a computer screen. Often an online exhibition can be seen as a secondary experience, one that only suffices in [...]

Johannes Vogl: Globe

Alexander Levy, 08.11.–20.12.2013

Johannes Vogl: Globe

Johannes Vogl, Laterne / Lantern (Videostill)2013

The gallery alexander levy is pleased to present new works from Johannes Vogl from November 9th to December 20th.

Johannes Vogl cannot be described as a classic sculptor, but rather much more as a poetic inventor.
It is often everyday situations that inspire Vogl in his sculptures, installations or videos. This was also the case with O.T. (Rest 1) and O.T. (Rest 2). From a steel plate in standard industrial format, familiar from construction sites as roadway plates, Vogl burns out a semicircle. The two objects stand opposite one another in the exhibit space. They lean heavily against the wall and still have a subliminal connection to one another – both works are the residual product of the other.

In the field of tension of the two steel sculptures stands a school on a round, black table. Globe however revolves fast around the axis reverse to the rotation of the earth – an attempt by Vogl to turn back [...]

Donelle Woolford: I am another world, Artistic Authorship between Desubjectivization and Recanonization:Performer/Performer/Audience/Mirror

Donelle Woolford: I am another world, Artistic Authorship between Desubjectivization and Recanonization:Performer/Performer/Audience/Mirror

An exhibition in the context of the key topic "The girl as artist and performer. Worlds of artistic de/subjectivization"
There are many reasons why artists appear as fictive persons or anonymously in a collective and create narratives situated between fiction and reality: as reference to gaps or blind spots in an otherwise discursively safeguarded canon, as a critique of institutional structures of authorship or their representational politics of normative gender roles and ethnicity, as protection from political persecution, and, last, not least, to demystify the inflated figure of the artist person. Collective authorship is currently situated on the fault lines of a deconstructed, postmodern concept of the subject and the anarcho-activist forms of resistance and critique of capitalism that may (and must) be organized collectively. These formations also refer to issues of virtual identities and the phantasms of their respective security policies. Narrative and [...]
