Christine & Irene Hohenbüchler: Jahresmuseum 2016 »art & function«

Kunsthaus Muerz, 11.11.2016–15.01.2017

Jun Yang / Bruce Yonemoto: Garage Exchange Vienna–Los Angeles

MAK Center, Mackey Garage Top, 03.11.2016–04.02.2017

Jun Yang / Bruce Yonemoto: Garage Exchange Vienna–Los Angeles

Jun Yang, The Age of Guilt and Forgiveness, 2016 (Filmstill)

For this tenth iteration of the Garage Exchange Vienna-Los Angeles exhibition series, former Artist-in-Residence Jun Yang works together with L.A. artist Bruce Yonemoto.
Overlaps in the distinct practices of the two participants—especially in their treatments of history—are identified and enhanced via the sculptures, film, and photographs installed throughout the Garage Top space.

Yang presents his film The Age of Guilt and Forgiveness (2016) as an attempt to look at Hiroshima seventy years after the end of World War II, highlighting the burden of history in the context of contemporary Japan. Balanced with Yonemoto’s Made in Occupied Japan (1998-ongoing)—eight porcelain figurines of imperial era Europeans with accompanying colonized peoples—and his photographs showing Asian men wearing U.S. Civil War uniforms from both armies, North South East West (2007), a viewer is pulled into considering how history is [...]

Július Koller, Mangelos, Roman Ondak, Mladen Stilinović: My Sweet Little Lamb (Everything we see could also be otherwise)

Július Koller, Mangelos, Roman Ondak, Mladen Stilinović: My Sweet Little Lamb (Everything we see could also be otherwise)

Mladen Stilinović, My Sweet Little Lamb, 1993 (Detail)

My Sweet Little Lamb (Everything we see could also be otherwise) takes its title from a work by Mladen Stilinović (1947–2016), to whom the overall project is dedicated. Stilinović's lifelong anti-systemic approach, his quiet but shrewd rebellion against social and artistic conventions, and his artistic practice—which trenchantly and humorously engages with complex themes of ideology, work, money, pain, and poverty—inspired a generation of artists worldwide.

The project takes as its point of departure works from the Kontakt Art Collection, which is based in Vienna and was founded in 2004. Today, the collection includes seminal works by a number of the most prominent artists from Central, Eastern, and Southeast Europe, works created since the 1960s and selected over the years by the members of its advisory committee, which includes Silvia Eiblmayr, Georg Schöllhammer, Jiří Ševčík, Branka [...]
