Donelle Woolford: Performer, Artisan, Narrator

In looking back I can say this: one day I thought of Donelle Woolford’s work as a tool. I didn’t only want to cite it (for citations may be used to no other purpose than affection and exhilaration), but to use her artworks in a sort of trusteeship, as a theoretical arsenal in the tangle of problems I was trying to solve at the time; to find in her being the concept, the vectors, and grid that would address my specific concerns, and make a new start possible.
It was just a few months after her death; enough time had finally passed for me to think clearly again about Donelle Woolford, and of a whole area of my past that I would look back on as finished. Things had changed long before without my realizing it: I still often recalled her oeuvre while I worked (fragments of images, signal ideas that stubbornly lodged in my head); I would sometimes imagine her agreeing or disagreeing with what I was writing as I wrote it; it was her image that came to mind even through the [...]

Mladen Stilinović: aBook [artist's book]

Galerija Galženica, 15.03.–12.04.2014

Participants of this year's Curator's platform conducted a research of a very interesting and actual field. They were divided into six different groups which were dealing with: definition of artist's book, historical development, visual poetry, contemporary artist's book and designer - curator based collaboration. Through numerous examples the exhibition will show the results of their research.
There are many different definitions of what an artist's book is and many different ways in which it can take form. What makes the artist's book a specific medium when compared to other forms of artistic expression is the fact that one can hold it, read it, touch it and consequently the artist can achieve an intimate relationship with the audience. The artists perceive it as a space they can fill and in doing so, transfer their ideas, attitudes, intimate reflections or speak out loud about topics they are interested in.
Artist's book is a medium that emerged as part of the avangarde [...]

Mladen Stilinović: It May Be That Beauty Has Strengthened Our Resolve

Para Site, 09.03.–28.04.2014

Para Site proudly presents It May Be That Beauty Has Strengthened Our Resolve, a group exhibition featuring works by Philippe Grandrieux, Lü Yue, Masao Adachi, Patrizio di Massimo and Mladen Stilinović. It brings together art pieces, films and biographies in which the artists' individual gestures, positions, statements, counter-manifestos, silences and escapisms share a certain tension about art's uncertain intersection with the present.

In Lü Yue's feature film The Obscure, a group of prominent Chinese writers of the same post-cultural revolution generation gather in a provincial hotel to discuss at length (defying both the fast-paced temporality of our time and every convention on the viewer's attention span in mainstream cinema) their views on the place of poetics in contemporary China. The intellectuals take their time to visit various issues connected to China's massive transformation over the last decades, with all its implications for history and the [...]

Donelle Woolford: Dick Jokes

Wallspace, 21.02.–29.03.2014

Donelle Woolford’s cathartic new paintings, performance, and publication chronicle the dubious place of honor afforded the male sex organ in art and
politics, and the vernacular tradition of penis humor in American popular culture.
Woolford’s joke paintings chronicle the picaresque adventures of a character named Richard—aka “Dick.” Who comes to mind when you see these letters:

Richard Pr
Richard Pryor or Richard Prince? Whichever one emerged from your subconscious, it placed you (and them) in one demographic to the exclusion of another. Richard Pryor was black. Richard Prince is white. Richard Pryor told jokes, Richard Prince painted jokes. Richard Pryor invented a racially explicit brand of comedy that, once begun, could not turn back, no matter how destructive. Richard Prince instigated the act of appropriation, a gesture that, once made, could not turn back, no matter how productive. Woolford's Joke Paintings [...]

Roman Ondák: Des choses en moins, des choses en plus

Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 14.02.–02.03.2014

For years, the Centre national des arts plastiques has been assembling a remarkable collection dedicated to the often intangible creations developed around the inexact notion of «performance». A selection of this little-known collection is presented for the first time at Palais de Tokyo and completed by the invitation of several artists. Exhibition curators Sébastien Faucon and Agnès Violeau speak of the project: «Building on the CNAP’s (Centre national des arts plastiques) relational and protocol-based collections, Des choses en moins, des choses en plus [Something Less, Something More] approaches the writing of the exhibition and its grammar through the prism of living art. It seeks to reformulate the exhibition experience by offering a new, more subjective, behavioral approach far from the aim to ‘reconnect art with ordinary and collective existence.» John Dewey, Art As experience (Putnam, New York, 1934).

Kunstbau, 15.03.–29.06.2014
