Hugo Canoilas

Stingrays on the Woods

With reference to his exhibition Fables, these lithographs are intended to provoke small narratives in the viewers, to stimulate their imagination and to expand the possibilities of relationships.

The technical implications of Hugo Canoilas's painting are reproduced in the lithographic stone: colour is reduced to black and white, with the sublimation of the shadow as a receptacle for our projections. The first motifs oscillate between animals that poetically move through their natural environments, wishing to expand the possibilities of life and relationships. Some other elements came from Esterházy Schatzkammer's Wunderkammer, where natural or manufactured objects come together. And lastly, there are also motifs from Portuguese Renaissance paintings, which nourish the symbolic and reinforce the convergence of different times, light and value systems. All these forms stimulate interrelationships as a materiality of art.
