Nilbar Güreş

Sour as a Lemon (2020), which lends its title to the solo exhibition of the artist at Kunsthalle Pasquart, is a frontal self-portrait that continues the revolt which began with Self-Defloration (2006). In this case, she prefers to circumstantially depict the masculine pose designated as "manspreading" instead of condemning the attitude in itself, as has been done by various feminist movements. Without bitterness, but instead with sour, stinging tone of an outspoken individual employing parrhesia, Nilbar Güreş seeks to make the real coincide with what it designates. In her case, words are embodied in actions, in a fragile mastery of her hand, of her tongue and of her lions.
